Micro-season 53 of 72 · Sep 28 – Oct 2

Insects seal their dens.

Mushi kakurete to wo fusagu

The last crickets fall silent as insects retreat underground, sealing themselves away for winter's long sleep.

A peculiar stillness settles over the garden — the chorus of autumn insects that filled recent nights grows sparse, then sporadic. Morning dew lingers longer on spider webs now abandoned. The earth itself seems to inhale, drawing its small creatures down into darkness, as the air carries that unmistakable mineral scent of soil preparing to close.

Nature notes

Crickets and grasshoppers, so vocal just weeks ago, disappear into crevices beneath stones and fallen bark. Ground beetles burrow deeper, and ant colonies seal their entrances with packed earth. The sky takes on a higher, more distant quality — that particular autumn blue the Japanese call 'tenkoukō,' the color of sky glimpsed through cleared air. Cosmos flowers sway at their peak while persimmon trees show the first blush of orange among darkening leaves.

At the table

01

A clear soup brimming with autumn mushrooms — maitake, shimeji, enoki — their earthy fragrance rising with the steam as nights turn cool.

02

Ripe persimmon dressed in silken tofu and sesame, its honeyed sweetness balanced by the subtle bitterness of the season's turning.

03

Mackerel simmered in sweet miso, its rich autumn fat perfectly matched to the robust sauce as the fish reaches peak flavor before cold sets in.

04

Savory egg custard studded with jade-green ginkgo nuts, their slight bitterness a reminder of autumn's complexity.

Cultural note

This micro-season falls during the final days of Higan, the autumn equinox observance when families visit ancestral graves and offer ohagi rice cakes. The phrase 'mushi kakurete to wo fusagu' — insects hiding and closing their doors — carries a Buddhist resonance: all beings, however small, prepare for cycles of dormancy and renewal. Temple bells seem to carry further in the thinning air.
