Micro-season 43 of 72 · Aug 7 – Aug 11
Cool winds arrive.
Suzukaze itaru
A breath of cooler air arrives in the morning, the first whisper that summer's grip is loosening.
Before dawn, something has shifted. The air that enters through an open window carries a different weight — still warm, but threaded now with a coolness that was absent yesterday. Cicadas continue their chorus, yet in the spaces between, you might catch the softer trill of autumn insects beginning their tentative song.
Nature notes
Higurashi cicadas cry their melancholy evening song, their calls a harbinger of autumn even as summer blazes on. Morning glories unfurl at first light, their colors intensifying in response to the subtle temperature drop. In the mountains, susuki grass begins to show the faintest silver at its tips, and dragonflies — the akiakane — appear in greater numbers, their red bodies vivid against the hazy sky.

At the table
Deep-fried eggplant steeped in chilled dashi, a dish that captures the threshold between summer's heat and autumn's first relief.
Simmered winter squash in sweet soy broth, the first kabocha of the season offering dense sweetness as nights begin to cool.
Rice folded with sliced myoga ginger, its sharp fragrance and pink edges bringing brightness to late summer tables.
Chilled buckwheat noodles topped with paper-thin rounds of sudachi citrus, their green tartness cutting through the lingering humidity.
Cultural note
Obon preparations begin in earnest as families ready to welcome ancestral spirits home. Lanterns are hung, altar offerings arranged, and the cucumber horses and eggplant cows — shōryō-uma — are crafted to carry spirits swiftly to and gently from the household. This liminal week, balanced between summer's peak and autumn's approach, is considered the time when the boundary between worlds grows thin.

Somewhere, a wind chime rings once and falls silent, as if listening for an answer that the season has not yet given.
