Micro-season 42 of 72 · Aug 2 – Aug 6
Heavy rains sometimes fall.
Taiu tokidoki furu
Sudden afternoon downpours drench the summer landscape, breaking the relentless heat with walls of warm rain that vanish as quickly as they arrive.
The sky bruises quickly now — one moment brilliant blue, the next a churning gray that releases sheets of rain so heavy the mountains disappear. The sound arrives first: a rushing hiss on the leaves, then the percussion of fat drops on tile roofs and hydrangea leaves. Within the hour, steam rises from the asphalt, and cicadas resume their chorus as if nothing happened.
Nature notes
Frogs chorus with renewed vigor after each downpour, their calls echoing from flooded rice paddies. Dragonflies patrol the humid air between storms, hunting in the golden light that follows rain. The lotus ponds are at their peak now, great white and pink blooms opening at dawn, their waxy leaves beading with raindrops that roll like mercury.

At the table
Blanched molokhia dressed with dashi and soy, its mucilaginous texture cooling and restorative in the oppressive humidity.
Salt-grilled beltfish, its silver skin crisped over charcoal, the clean white flesh a light meal suited to rain-dampened appetites.
Sweet corn fritters fried until golden, capturing summer's sweetness in each crisp bite.
Cold udon noodles served on ice with dipping sauce, the perfect refuge from heat that builds between storms.
Cultural note
Early August marks the beginning of Obon preparations in many regions, as families ready their homes and altars to welcome ancestral spirits. The sudden rains of this season are sometimes said to be the tears of the spirits arriving early, washing the paths between worlds. Families begin gathering cucumber horses and eggplant cattle — the spirit vehicles that will carry ancestors home.
